While the differences are many, the similarities are striking. Moving through Cuba, Nicaragua and the States, the portraits include dancers and farmers from each. Unlike the work in Africa, this series follows the individuals through the years. The subjects have as much input as the photographer, making the collaborations truly equal.
Rather than photographing without permission, conversations lead to plans made. Perhaps the location is two hours outside of Los Angeles, or a beach on the outskirts of La Habana. Whatever it takes, the sessions occur as per the desires of the individuals. This creates a set of unforgettable circumstances surrounding the images, and conversations continue until the next visit.
